Provisional License

Before you do anything else, you need to get a provisional license. For more information on getting a provisional license please go to the DVLA website.

Choosing an Instructor or Driving School

Choosing the right instructor for you is extremely important. Think back to when you were at school (if you aren't now!). Who did you learn the most from? The teacher who shouted at you or the one who took the time to explain and made learning enjoyable?

Even if a driving school has many instructors, it does not guarantee that you will get the instructor that is right for you. It may also be worth asking if the Instructor who will be teaching you is a DSA Approved Driving Instructor or a Practising Driving Instructor. Approved Instructors (ADIs) are fully qualified whereas Practising Instructors (PDIs) are waiting to pass their final instructor exam.

Regardless of which Driving School you choose to learn with, make sure that you are happy with both the quality of your lessons and your instructor's teaching style. After all, you are paying good money for professional tuition, not to be shouted at if you make a mistake.

If someone you know has a recommendation then that can be a good way to choose your instructor. A good idea may be to book one lesson only before deciding to book any further lessons regardless of which school you choose. That way if you dont feel comfortable or happy with the quality of tuition then you are not tied in.

How much will it cost?

Learning to drive isn't cheap but you will be gaining a skill that is for life and means freedom to come and go when and where you choose.

According to the latest DSA information (click here to find out more), the pupils with the best chance of passing their practical tests have around of 45 hours professional driving tuition combined with plenty of private practice. This gives you an idea how much this could cost you, as well as test fees, license fees and your instructors fee for tests.
